UMB是CDMA2000系列标准的演进升级版本，可升级至20MHz的带宽，可在现有或新分配的频段中部署。UMB能够带来更大的带宽、频段和波段选择范围，以及网络的可升级性和灵活性。UMB系统是以OFDMA(正交频分复用接入)技术为基础、专门针对无线移动环境和实时应用优化的移动无线宽带系统，它继承了DO系统的自适应编码调制、HARQ(物理层混合重传)以及QoS控制机制，结合了CDMA、TDM、QOFDMA(准OFDMA)、LDPC(低密度奇偶校验码)等其它先进技术，同时引入了基于MIMO(多路输入输出)、SDMA(空分复用接入)和Beamforming(波束赋性)等多天线技术，使系统可以在达到更高传输效率的同时经济有效地支持各类具有QoS要求的应用。
